I’ve moved simonhawketts.com to self hosted

Any regular reader of this blog will possibly notice that it has a different look today. That is because, after thinking about it on and off for a couple of years, this morning I took the plunge and moved my site from wordpress.com to a self hosted site. If your dns settings have updated, you will see this post in the style of the new blog here on the left; if they haven’t you have a small amount of time […]

Moving found film from multisite to single site

This is a non-photography post about the process I used to move the Found-Film site from a WordPress multisite to single site install. Hopefully, this will be useful for anyone who needs to do a similar move at some point. Reasons why I moved from multisite to single site There were various reasons I moved from a multisite install to a single site install but many were driven by SEO. The found film site has been up and running for […]

Update on Stats

Last week I posted an article about the changes I’d noticed to the number of visitors and views I’ve received over the last few weeks. This post is a very short one which just updates what I’ve found. The picture above shows the number of clicks, impressions and CTR (click through rate) over the last 28 days and it confirms what I thought last week. The impressions have dropped because the google algorithm which determines which pages to show for […]

Trying to improve SEO ratings

I’ve been writing my photoblog for about 4 years now, initially as a google blogger site, then as a wordpress site, and for the last couple of years as a wordpress site with it’s own domain. In that time I’ve seen the traffic move up steadily from only a few 10’s of visits when I started to about 3,000 visitors a week and about 20,000 views as measured on the wordpress stats tool. Well, that was true until about 2 […]

Change in WordPress view stats?

Has anyone else noticed a change in the way WordPress are counting views in the last couple of weeks? I’ve noticed that although my visitor numbers have stayed at approximately the same level over the last few weeks, the number of visits per visitor has dramatically changed. It happens that because of the nature of my site I have quite a few picture galleries and up until a few weeks ago any gallery view of a picture was counted as […]

New site design

Any regular reader will notice that my photo blog has a different look this morning. Although I don’t like to mess with the layout or theme often, I do review it every year or so to see if I think it would look better using a different layout. This year however I changed it for a more compelling reason. I discovered using google analytics that nearly 50% of the users are accessing the site using a mobile device rather than […]

Decision made – I’m sticking with wordpress (at the moment)

Last week I wrote a short post about the thoughts I’d had about my blog hosting arrangements. Briefly to recap, I’ve been thinking about moving my site away from the umbrella of  wordpress.com and moving to a self-hosted wordpress.org site on a Digital Ocean virtual server where I would have more control. Well, after a few days thought I’ve decided to stick with wordpress.com, at least for the next year and these are my reasons. It’s mainly to do with the […]

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions – or where to host my site.

It was about a year ago that I moved my site from a wordpress domain, simonhawketts.wordpress.com to my own domain simonhawketts.com but at the time I made that move I kept the site hosting at wordpress.com. The payment for the hosting is due for renewal in a few weeks time and I’ve been deciding if I should keep the site within workpress or if I should move to a self hosted arrangement. The driver for this is not really cost […]

The annoyance of scripted views

In August 2013 I wrote a post titled ‘What has happened to my wordpress views‘ which was bemoaning the fall away in my blog views in that month. As it happened, that seemed to be a seasonal thing and as I’ve continued to add posts to my site the traffic has gradually grown as my pages get found be search and social media users. Well this week I experienced the opposite of that problem. At about 10pm on Sunday I […]

Update on my view numbers

I’ve been doing a bit more research and I’ve cleared up a couple of misunderstandings on my part. I originally thought that the number of search results I was appearing in was unchanged, and I couldn’t understand why my views were dropping. I’ve since worked out that although some search terms are unaffected (for example my post on  ‘minolta dynax 5’ is still on the first page when I do a google search for it), overall the number of times […]

What has happened to my wordpress views ?

I’m not hugely concerned with the number of views I get on my blog, but I keep an eye on them so I know from day to day roughly how many views I’m getting. Up until Sunday I was normally averaging between 60 – 120 a day. On Sunday I only got 16 views and since then I’ve been averaging significantly less – about 15. Now as far as I can see my google page rank hasn’t changed for the […]
