Ricoh GXR VF-2, the missing piece in the puzzle

I’ve written several posts in the last couple of years about my Ricoh GXR camera and although it’s now quite an old design I still find it one of the best cameras I’ve ever used for configurability and usability. The one  thing that’s made it awkward to use however, and made the difference between taking it with me or leaving it at home has been the rear screen LCD. Great though the LCD is, it suffers from the same problem that […]

Ricoh GXR A12 50mm black & white pictures

I read an article a few days ago about setting up the Ricoh GXR as a Leica M Monochrom camera replacement and, because it was a dull, gloomy day today when I went for a walk I decided to try out the settings and shoot in black & white. In reality, setting the camera up to act like a Leica Monochrom was as simple as selecting high contrast black & white jpeg and switching to manual exposure mode but I […]

Pictures around Reading with a Ricoh GXR 28mm A12

A few months ago the office where I work moved from Stevenage where I live to Reading where I don’t. This means that my trips to the office are no longer a short bike ride away but instead involve a couple of train journeys which last for about 2 1/2 hours and as a result I only go into the office about once a month now and work from home for the most part. Wednesday this week was one of […]

Some more Ricoh GXR shots

When we recently went to CentreParcs Woburn Forest I took a couple of film cameras along to experiment with film photography again for the first time in many years. On our first day there however, it was difficult to use the film gear because for a lot of the day is was all packed in the car. I also took my Ricoh GXR along with me, so for those first few hours I used that along with the 28mm APS-C […]

Ricoh GXR A12 28mm samples

I wrote recently about the new sensor units I bought from China for my Ricoh GXR camera body and followed it up with posts about the 50mm macro unit and the sensor only A12 unit. Well this short post completes the series by including some sample images from the other unit I bought – a 28mm equivalent APS-C sensor lens. As with the 50mm unit, the 28mm unit is not actually fitted with a 28mm lens but a lens which is […]

Ricoh GXR A12 Mount first impressions

I posted a while ago about discovering new lens units for my Ricoh GXR camera from a site in China. Well, I found that the same supplier also had the Leica mount sensor unit for a very good price and so I decided to get that as well. This is different from the other units I’ve bought because it is a sensor only unit fitted with a Leica bayonet M mount. That seems to go against the philosophy of the […]

New sensors for my Ricoh GXR

I bought my Ricoh GXR camera a couple of years ago now, but although I think it’s a really good camera I haven’t put it to the use I would have liked to. There are a couple of reasons for this: I don’t have the optional EVF and I find it difficult to compose a picture in bright sunlight but the main reason is the sensor units I have. When I bought the camera, the two lens units which were […]

The Coach

Today my son went on his first school residential visit. He is away for 4 days and we went to his school to see him off at lunchtime. I took along my Ricoh GXR with an S10 sensor unit and took a few photos. Although they are all essentially snapshots, I particularly liked this one when I first saw it and thought it would make a reasonable post to record the day. This is post processed in Lightroom 5 with […]

Some family pictures from Center Parcs in Nottingham

These are some pictures I took in the Nottingham Center Parcs when we stayed there for a weekend in September. We have been to Center Parcs several times over the last few years, but we mostly go to the Thetford Forest site near the village of Elvden. This time we went to Sherwood again for the first time for about 4 years. There pictures were taken with either my Pentax K5 or the Ricoh GXR fitted with an S10 module.

Typical Lightroom processing steps.

In this post I’m going to outline the steps I’ve gone through to take an image from the initial RAW capture to the final image using Lightroom. This is as much an aide memoir to my future self as a guide to others, and in no way is this the only sequence that could be used. The image above is one that I took with my Ricoh GXR fitted with the S10 lens unit. The image is not a particularly […]

Ricoh GXR S10 Lens Unit

I’ve owned my Ricoh GXR Camera for a couple of weeks now and discovered a couple of days ago that SRS Microsystems are also selling parts of this system off cheap, and as a result I purchased an S10 lens unit to go with the P10 I already own. I received the unit this morning, just before we were about to go out to another National Trust property, Hatfield Forest. I fitted the new unit in place of the P10 […]

A Visit to Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire

I have a few days off work early next week, so we decided to get into the holiday mood a little early and visit a local National Trust property in Cambridgeshire, Wimpole Hall. It only took about 30 minutes to get to the location and we got there fairly early and were able to park without difficulty. Instead of buying tickets we decided to become members of the National Trust, because we are going to Northumberland on holiday in a […]

The perfect GXR

This seems to be an odd post from a man who has just bought a Ricoh GXR so I’ll just preface it with the statement that I love my GXR and think it’s a really novel and interesting idea. However it could have been so much better. The idea Ricoh presented with the GXR was that of a camera that you never have to replace because you can buy new sensor/lens combinations as technology improves, and Ricoh would keep the […]

Abstract image with Ricoh GXR

I took my new GXR into work today and I was playing about with a feature called Full Press Snap. This allows you to set a default focus distance so that if you take a picture by fully pressing the shutter without the half press to focus, the camera automatically focuses to the set distance and takes the exposure. This is a great feature for Street Photography, because you can take the picture almost instantly. With a small sensor unit […]

Ricoh GXR + P10 initial shots / thoughts

I’ve had my Ricoh GXR + P10 camera for a few days now and took it to my Son’s cricket practice this morning to see how it performs. Below are the pictures I took – click any for a better sized image. Although I bought this camera with a P10 unit because that was the best cost deal at Clifton Cameras, I could see that if I could ever afford to buy some Leica M-Mount lenses and the 12M APS-C […]
