Garden Insects

Over the last few weeks it’s become a bit of a habit to go into the garden at some point in the day with my camera to see if I can get any pictures of the insects and spiders which crawl and fly around the plants. Although neither my wife Janice or I are naturally gifted gardeners, we have been steadily improving the condition of the garden and introducing more plants and flowers  in order to encourage more insects and […]

Black and white pictures around Stevenage

A few months ago I started working from home rather than going into an office every day, so I’ve started having a walk early in the morning to make sure I get some exercise. This morning I took along my Pentax K5 in order to take a few pictures as I walked around. I wasn’t very impressed when I got back and reviewed the pictures. I’ve walked the route so many times that nothing seems new or different so any […]

Garden macro photos

I went into the garden this afternoon to get some macro pictures with my Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens and Pentax K-5 DSLR. I’ve been using the K5 quite a bit over the last few weeks instead of my Nex 6, simply because I’m going to take it on holiday in a few weeks along with a couple of Pentax film cameras. When I put the pictures through post processing in Lightroom I was struck by how clean and well […]

Pentax MZ-M pictures developed in Caffenol C-M

Over the last couple of days I’ve been using my Pentax MZ-M with a fomapan 200 black & white film to get some sample pictures to test the camera. Today I developed those pictures using Caffenol C-M – the pictures are shown below. Since I last developed film in caffenol, I’ve bought a film strip mount for my slide duplicator, so I was able to be a much better copy of the negatives this time, however, I’m a bit disappointed […]

The reality of mirrorless photography.

I bought my Sony Nex 6 mirrorless camera about a year ago now and it’s given me some great service in that time having been my main camera on trips out and holidays, as well as providing a great platform for testing vintage manual focus lenses. Because it is so adaptable I’ve been able to throw just about any lens on it and get some great results. However, in that time I’ve also discovered a few flaws which I didn’t […]

Favourite pictures – The accordion player

This is one of those pictures which starts out as a colour picture which doesn’t really stand out, but once converted to black & white makes more of an impact. I took this whilst we were on holiday in Durham last year with a Pentax K5 and Sigma 18-125 HSM zoom. We were walking through the town and I saw this man playing and instinctively raised the camera and snapped without any real thought about composition. Later I cropped it […]

Sony Nex 6 high ISO noise performance

I while ago I wrote a post about the low noise performance of the Pentax K-5 when used an high ISO and I thought it would be interesting to also look at the performance of my Sony Nex 6 when used in high ISO. It’s particularly interesting at the moment since this is the time of year when most days are murky and it’s quite common to be taking pictures using the high ISO setting on the camera. All the […]

Bluebell woods in stevenage

For many years when it gets to late April I have thought ‘I really must get to the bluebell woods in Stevenage and take some pictures’, and each year I’ve always managed to not quite make it there. Well this year was different and I finally managed to get to take some pictures of bluebells. These were all taken about a week ago, after we returned from holiday. Because my Sony Nex 6 has some dust on the sensor I […]

Caught in the spot light

We have a lovely sunny day here in the UK and I went into the garden to see what wildlife was about. This tidy spider was hanging in his web on a tree  and the sun light was directly behind him. I rushed inside before either he moved or the sun went behind a cloud and managed to take a few pictures using my Pentax K-5 and Tamron 90mm macro lens. This one is about the best I got at […]

Final autumn pictures

This is a post describing a walk around the local park in Stevenage and the pictures I took there this afternoon. I’ve realised today that I take a trip to the local park and take photographs just about every spring and autumn, and this autumn has been no different as today I had a walk round Fairlands Valley Park with my camera. I took a variety of lenses with me, a Sigma 18-125mm Standard Zoom, my favorite Tamron 10-24mm Wide […]

Sunlight through trees

This is a picture which I took during our trip to the North East of England a couple of months ago. I walked to the back of the cottage we were staying at and took this picture of the sun rising and breaking through the trees. Although it’s normally not a good thing to have flare in a picture, I think that in this case the small breakout of flare in the middle left hand side actually adds to the […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Hue of You

Thought I’d have a go at the Weekly Photo Challenge. The Challenge this week is ‘Hues’ – Take a picture which tells the viewer something about you using colour. Well I like Autumn because of the colours, so I took some Autumnal photos.

The best of my Beamish photographs

This post contains all my best photographs from the Beamish living museum in County Durham which I haven’t yet published. My Beamish Photos We went to Beamish twice during our holiday, partly because Beamish has a policy that an entry ticket allows any number of entries over the next year, and partly because it’s such an interesting and large place that we needed two days to see everything ! Transport around the museum is by traditional trams and busses, although […]

More Raby Castle photographs

These are the best of the other photographs I took whilst at Raby Castle in County Durham Raby Castle Pictures All these pictures were taken on the same day I took the courtyard picture which I posted a few days ago with my Pentax K5. The majority of them were with either a sigma 18-125 standard zoom or my Tamron 10-24mm Super Wide angle. It was quite a dull and grey day when we arrived at the Castle, having spent the […]
