Chatsworth house interior

Yesterday I posted an image of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire taken from the gardens. Today I’m posting a wide angel view of the interior of the house taken at high ISO with my Pentax K5. One of the biggest problems taking photos in the interior of stately homes is that they are generally very dark and don’t normally allow the use of flash to take pictures. Because of this you basically have to turn the ISO on the camera very […]

Fuji X-T1 and Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens

When I bought my Fuji X-T1 a couple of weeks ago there was a double cashback offer available which meant I could pick up an additional lens and get a really good deal. There are several lenses I intend to buy at some point, but the first one I decided to get was the Fujinon xf 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens which I picked up at the same time as I bought the camera. Today I had to go on a […]

Snowshill Manor National Trust pictures

When we stayed in Gloucestershire recently one of the places we visited was Snowshill Manor house which is a national trust property and this post has a collection of photos which I took whilst we were there. Snowshill Manor Pictures I actually took two cameras with me on the visit to snowshill – my Pentax K5 DSLR, and a Minolta 505si super 35mm film camera fitted with a standard minolta 28 – 80 kit zoom. Each of the pictures shown […]

York Minster pictures

Whilst we were on holiday in York we paid a visit to York Minster where I took a large number of pictures. Although I’ve published some of the pictures of my daughter and some other pictures in and around the Minster, ¬†I haven’t published all my favourite interior shots so I’ve gathered them all here in a single post. Obviously, there are several parts of a church interior which are dark places, so a lot of these pictures were taken […]

National railway museum York

During a recent trip to York we visited the National Railway Museum which is conveniently situated next to a Park and Ride bus stop in the city. I assumed that I would need to use a fairly wide angle lens to take pictures of the engines, so I packed my Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle along with a Takumar 28mm f/3.5 and Takumar 55mm f/1.8 to use on my Camdiox focal reducer. As it happens I mostly used the longest […]

Sony Nex 6 high ISO noise performance

I while ago I wrote a post about the low noise performance of the Pentax K-5 when used an high ISO and I thought it would be interesting to also look at the performance of my Sony Nex 6 when used in high ISO. It’s particularly interesting at the moment since this is the time of year when most days are murky and it’s quite common to be taking pictures using the high ISO setting on the camera. All the […]

Favourite Pictures – The forge at Kentwell

This is another picture from out visit to Kentwell Hall in Suffolk – this time a tudor recreation of a blacksmiths forge. We had just come out of the restaurant at lunchtime and saw a group of people in a bunch around a small building just outside the stables. When we went to have a look we found that it was the blacksmiths forge and someone was being fitted out with a set of chainmail. Emma was immediately interested and […]

Favourite Pictures – Tudor provisions

My favourite picture choice is again from Kentwell Hall, but today it’s two pictures of the same subject. One of the rooms was set out as a normal Tudor house and this display of foodstuffs was arranged in the sunlight streaming through the window. It was the light which attracted me to the shot – if it had been a dull day I probably wouldn’t even have noticed it, but in the almost dark room this simple arrangement of food […]

Favourite Pictures – The gunsmith's toolbox

Another picture today from our trip to Kentwell Hall where a ‘Tudor Day’ was taking place. In one of the out buildings we found a gunsmith at work and I took this detail picture of the small wooden toolbox sitting on his bench. Because of the low light this picture was taken at 3200 iso with the lens set to f/2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/60 sec but it is still a remarkably clean image. Sony Nex 6 Soligor […]

Wookey hole caves – high iso with a K-5

Since I bought my Pentax K-5 one of the things I’ve been most impressed with is the low noise at high ISO settings and the picture picture below is one which amply demonstrates this. I’ve already posted about the K-5’s high iso low noise performance¬†and used a small version of this picture in that post, but I think this picture is quite nice on its own merits so I thought I’d do a separate post featuring it. We were on […]

Pentax K-5 low noise performance

In this post I am discussing the Pentax K-5 low noise performance and include some sample pictures I’ve taken in very low light conditions to demonstrate just how good the camera is. Introduction When I first became interested in photography, which was about 40 years ago, there were two big names in camera manufacture – Nikon and Pentax. At the time I owned a Zenit B with a 58mm screw thread lens but I really wanted to own one of […]
