    Garden Insects

Over the last few weeks it’s become a bit of a habit to go into the garden at some point in the day with my camera to see if I can get any pictures of the insects and spiders which crawl and fly around the plants. Although neither my wife Janice or I are naturally gifted gardeners, we have been steadily improving the condition of the garden and introducing more plants and flowers  in order to encourage more insects and...

    Garden macro photos

I went into the garden this afternoon to get some macro pictures with my Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens and Pentax K-5 DSLR. I’ve been using the K5 quite a bit over the last few weeks instead of my Nex 6, simply because I’m going to take it on holiday in a few weeks along with a couple of Pentax film cameras. When I put the pictures through post processing in Lightroom I was struck by how clean and well...

    Butterflies and other insects

It’s been a hot day here today and I’ve been out with my macro lens trying to get some interesting insect pictures. Although it is hot, almost as soon as I got to Priors wood (where I usually go to get insect pictures) the sun went in and the light levels dropped quite a lot. Although that didn’t make it in anyway impossible to take pictures, it meant about 3 stops less light, so most of these were taken at...

    Nex 6 Macro photographs

This morning I took my customary walk around the field near our house to see what insects I could find before the Sun warmed them to the point where I wouldn’t be able to catch them. This post shows the Macro Photographs I took. Nex 6 Macro Photographs I found quite a variety of insects as I walked around – butterflies, ladybirds and flies, and I also managed to get some pictures of the red mayflies which were darting about...

    Favourite Picture – Grounded Butterfly

This is a picture I took at Dunwich National Trust nature reserve whilst we were completing a ‘Pirate treasure hunt’ with Emma. We had just completed a clue and this Peacock butterfly fluttered by and sat on the ground in front of me. Fortunately I had my Vivitar series one 70 – 210mm macro zoom fitted to the Nex 6 and I was able to fire off a couple of shots before he(she?) fluttered away. Although this picture isn’t in...

    Orange tip butterfly

I know the orange tip butterfly is not a rare or endangered species, but I’ve seen them flutter by me for the last 4 or 5 years since I’ve been interested in macro photography and I’ve never been able to get a shot of one. That’s why I was particularly pleased when I finally managed to get a half decent shot this morning of an early specimen which fluttered by me. We had been out for a walk when I...

Macro photography – small skipper butterfly

This is another in my macro photography series, and this time features a small skipper butterfly. I took this picture in the priors wood area of Stevenage in August this year with what is now my standard macro photography kit consisting of my Pentax K5 and Tamron 90mm f/2.8. To get this picture I cropped from a bigger image to produce this more detailed and closer image. I think the interesting thing about this picture are the small ‘barbs’ which...

    Macro Photography – Grasshopper

I found this little grasshopper in a wooded area of Stevenage called Prior’s Wood yesterday. I could hear the grasshoppers all around as I walked about looking for butterflies. Unfortunately the butterfly population this year seems to be severely depleted, with only a few Marbled White, small Skippers and the common Tortoiseshell, Comma etc about. A couple of years ago I went to the same area and you could almost guarantee some great pictures just by pointing your camera at...

    Butterfly photographer’s helper

Last time I went to Priors wood in Stevenage to take butterfly pictures I had a helper with me. My Daughter Emma came along to see what all the fuss was about – and she brought her camera to see if she could get any pictures too. She was the ideal butterfly photographer’s helper!

Macro Photography – Marbled white butterfly

During the summer months, ever since I’ve had a camera capable of taking good macro photographs, I visit an area of Stevenage called Priors Wood. It’s an area of about 2 to 3 thousand square yards, in the middle of a wooded area and it’s normally teaming with insects and butterflies between late April and late September. The subject of this picture is a Marbled White butterfly which I took at Priors Wood with a Pentax K200D on July 2nd...

    Common Blue butterfly

I had an afternoon taking butterfly pictures in Knebworth. We walked across to Knebworth from Stevenage and I left Jan and the children in a small playground whilst I walked back to the public footpath which leads across the fields to Stevenage. I had seen a couple of butterflies in the hedgerow  there a day or so previously so I guessed that there would be something to photograph. Speckled wood butterfly When I got there the hedgerow was swarming with...

    Small copper butterfly

We took a trip down to Ware this afternoon so that James and Emma could stay with Jan and have a play in the priory playground whilst I went down to the river to take some photos. I left Jan with James and Emma and took the short walk along the road past Glaxo until I came to the bridge which leads across the river. A short walk across another bridge and then a left turn led me down to...
