    Sunshine and snow

This is a new treatment of an old picture which I took a couple of years ago with a Pentax K-r and a Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle lens. I took it during a snowy period in the field across the road from us and particularly like the starburst effect the Sun has which I believe is caused by the small aperture used. The main post processing which I carried out was to increase the saturation in the sky and...

    Weekly Challenge: Horizon 2

This is my second post in the weekly challenge, but essentially the same subject – Sea & Sky. This picture was taken in Sherringham using a Pentax K-r and a Tamron 10-24mm Super Wide angle lens set to it’s widest 10mm setting. Weekly photo challenge: Horizon

this week’s weekly challenge is Horizons. I always see that word in it’s literal sense and think of the line between the sea and the sky. I therefore submit this picture as my interpretation of Horizons. I took this picture a couple of years ago with a Pentax K200D and a pentax 18-55 Standard Kit lens. The location is Wells-next-the-sea in Norfolk. Related articles Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon ( Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon ( Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon ( Weekly...

    Wensum river bank

The River Wensum runs through the town of Fakenham in Norfolk, which happens to be the town I was born and raised in. My parent still live in Fakenham, so I quite often visit and take pictures of all the places which have changed so much since I was a boy. Although the paths and fields around the river have changed, the general layout and look of the river remains the same as it was when I used to live...

    Panorama effect from wide angle

I took this picture of the centre of Durham using the 10mm setting of my Tamron 10-24mm Super wide angle zoom. Once I imported the picture into Lightroom I realised that the shot has more impact when cropped down to a panorama style image, cutting out a lot of the foreground which was just pavement. I’ve used this technique quite a few times to create a panorama style shot; I know it doesn’t have the full reach of a stitched...

    Antique farm equipment

I found this old item of agricultural equipment lying in a field at the Beamish museum in County Durham. I have no idea what it is or what it’s used for, other than it was obviously pulled along and so was presumably used in the preparation of the land or sowing ? Anyway, understanding the subject matter isn’t essential for taking a picture so I took this as we walked from the main village back to the entry point to...

    Wide Angle Landscape

This picture was taken during a hike around Frosterley in County Durham during our recent holiday. It shows an old barn we walked past which I took with a Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle lens fitted to my Pentax K5. I find this lens to be superb for taking landscape photos – it has great colour rendition and being so wide a very high depth of field. This lens is rapidly becoming my favorite lens. I did some post-processing in...

    Punts on the Cam

During our trip to Cambridge yesterday I found these two punts which had been moored by the side of the river. I thought they made an interesting subject so I took this picture at the widest setting of my sigma 18 – 125mm Zoom. When we got home I added a bit of vignetting in Lightroom, and dropped the clarity a touch whilst boosting the vibrancy a small amount. Pentax K-5 Sigma 18-125 HSM zoom f/8.0 iso 200 18mm 1/320...

    Seafront at Sherringham

This is the seafront as Sherringham on the North Norfolk coast on one of those rare days when the Sun is out and it’s warm. I took this with a Pentax K-r and Tamron super wide angle 10-24mm zoom in August 2011. Pentax K-r Tamron 10-24mm f/9.5 1/4000 iso800 75mm   Related articles Boat 2-3-4 ( The lucky moment (

    The couple

This picture was taken in the cycle paths at Alexandra Palace, North London in September 2012. I saw this couple pushing their child along the cycle path and I thought it made a nice family scene. The trees which fold over them seem to frame the couple nicely and the light falls on them to form a natural highlight. Frost and Snow

These pictures were taken on a frosty Saturday in Feb 2012 with my Pentax K-r DSLR and a variety of lenses, either a Tamron 70-300mm Macro Zoom or the Pentax 18-55 Standard Kit lens. I found it quite difficult getting the correct exposure (this is before I knew about the 17% grey rule which cameras use to evaluate exposure) so there was some general lifting of exposure in Lightroom, consequently some I like and others I’m not so sure about....

    St Nicholas Church – Stevenage

This is St Nicholas church, one of the Parish Churches in Stevenage, taken on a sunny day in July 2010. This was taken with a Pentax K200D fitted with the standard 18-55 kit lens. Pentax K200D 1/250 sec f/11 iso200

    Fairlands valley park in Stevenage

This is a gallery of pictures which share a location in common. They were all taken in Fairlands Valley Park in Stevenage over the course of the last year. Fairlands Valley Pictures Fairlands is the home of the Stevenage Sailing club as well as a recreation area used by many people in Stevenage all year round. There are two ponds, a nature pond connected to the man made sailing lake by a short waterfall. I often walk round the park...

    Lonely seagull

This seagull was sitting out to sea in Sherringham on the North Norfolk coast. I took this picture on the same day I took the picture of the boat on the pebble beach in August 2011. It was taken with a Tamron 70-300mm Tele Zoom set to the full 300mm on a Pentax K-r. Because the lens was set to the full telephoto setting I had to increase the iso quite a bit to enable me to hand hold the...

    St Giles church, Codicote

These are some pictures of St Giles church in Codecote in Hertfordshire which I took during a trip out with my Daughter Emma one day in January. I took a trip out to this Church in January 2012, armed with my Pentax k-r and Tamron 10-24mm Super Wide Angle lens. It was a dull and grey day, but fortunately not wet and I was able to get several shots of this attractive old church. Emma came with me and she...

    Oil seed field in Hertfordshire

Oils seed is common in Hertfordshire and makes a picturesque view in the fields. Last year many of the fields around our house were given over to this crop and with my Sigma 18-125mm fitted to my Pentax K-r I walked the half mile to the closest field one day in May to get some photos. These pictures are the best of the 10 or so I took that day. As always I shot the series in raw and then post...

    Photographing a sunset.

I took a walk over the field after the children were in bed to get some shots of the sun setting. I’d never shot a sunset before and  wasn’t sure how much exposure compensation if any to apply. Basically I found a place along the path where I could get a shot of the sun settling over the horizon and set the camera up on a tripod. I set  +/- 2 EV bracketing on the camera and tried a few...

Sun through the branches of a tree

When I woke this morning and had a look out of the window I saw that the sky was completely clear and I decided to try to get some landscape photographs from the field between Stevenage and Knebworth. So at about 6:00 am I pulled on some clothes and headed across the road to the track which goes under the railway line and leads to the path to Knebworth. The good thing about taking pictures this early is that you...

    The crooked tree

This tree is in a field between Stevenage and Knebworth in Hertfordshire. It looks as if it’s been struck by lightening at some point and it certainly looks pretty rotten on the right hand side. On the day I took this picture I went out early and the sun was quite low in the sky and to the right in this picture. I set an exposure of 1/640 at F9 and I’m quite pleased with the result – I think...

    Three trees

Took a very early walk over the field between Stevenage and Knebworth. It’s a great time to take pictures before the sun is too harsh. This shot is a landscape composition of a tree which is about halfway along the path which goes round the field. It’s actually three trees in a short line, and the Path runs past it.
