Snowshill manor on film

This is a picture which I took a couple of years ago of Snowshill manor in Gloucestershire on Fuji 400 Superia Xtra 400 film with a Minolta X-505 super camera. Although I’ve published a group of pictures from this location before, I was sorting through some images to decide which could be archived to save some disk space. and I was struck by how good this looked. There is a brightness and clarity in this image which I didn’t manage […]

Fuji X-T1 wide angle picture from Stowe

A few days ago we visited another National Trust property at Stowe in Buckingham and I used it as another opportunity to use my Fuji X-T1 and Samyang 12mm lens combination. Although I took many photos, I’ve not yet been through all of them and decided which I like best, but I thought this picture was one of my better ones as I reviewed it in the camera. It was taken across one of the lakes, looking at the House […]

Dover's Hill in Gloucestershire

This is a post with some pictures of The National Trust’s Dover’s Hill in Gloucestershire which I took on a recent visit there. We only stayed a few minutes at this viewpoint over the Gloucestershire countryside, so I didn’t get many pictures, but these were my favourite of the 20 or so I took. A couple of these shots were actually constructed from 3 images taken using the camera’s bracketing function and merged using Lightroom’s new ‘merge to HDR’ function […]

Evening in Gloucestershire

On a recent trip to Gloucestershire I took out my Pentax K5 fitted with a Sigma 18-125 HSM zoom for an evening walk and took these pictures of the local countryside bathed in late evening sunshine. All these pictures have been imported into Lightroom CC for post processing and then exported at 1600px on the longest edge. To see them at full size follow this link. As well as my K5 I also took along a Pentax SFXn loaded with […]

Favourite pictures – York city wall defensive fort.

Another picture I took in York recently – this time it is part of the defensive elements of the city wall which surrounds the medieval city. Again it was with a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle lens set to 10mm to capture the maximum amount of the surrounding view. Favourite pictures – York Minster gate

This is a picture taken outside York Minster of the gates leading into the gardens/grassed area which surround it. This is another picture which I took using my Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5 super wide angle lens. On our trip to York it turned into a bit of a work horse, being fitted to my camera more often than any other lens I took with me and one of the reasons was because of the great definition, colour and contrast it offers. […]

Favourite pictures – The Sun in York

As we were walking along the river bank in the City of York recently, I took this picture of the road and people. It was a nice sunny day and I had my Tamron super wide angle lens fitted to my Sony Nex 6 and took this shot low down to emphasise the cobble stones. The aperture was set to f/22 to maximize the depth of field which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/320 sec at ISO 100, whilst […]

Favourite pictures – York museum gardens

This was one of those shots where I couldn’t actually see the composition when I took the picture, but it turned out ok anyway. We were walking through the Museum Gardens in the City of York and I saw this tree and the rock placed at the foot of it. I thought it might make a nice picture to include the rock in the foreground, so I bent down to take it but couldn’t see through the viewfinder or see […]

Favourite pictures – The wall

While we were at Beningbrough Hall in Yorkshire recently I had the 16-50mm standard lens fitted to my Sony Nex 6 and I tried taking a few pictures with the iAuto camera setting just to see how it performed. The result is the picture below which I think is really rather nice. I had to apply the lens corrections in Lightroom because the Sony E 16-50mm has some serious distortion at 16mm which this picture was taken at, but with […]

A day trip to Bennington Lordship

Today we decided to take a trip to Bennington Lordship to see the Snowdrops. It wasn’t a planned trip – we just looked on the website to see when it was open and discovered that today was one of the days when it was open so we decided to go over and see what the snowdrops were like. It’s only about 3 miles away from our house and only takes about 10 minutes to get there, so once we knew […]

Favourite pictures – The lake at Raby Castle

This is a picture I took at Raby Castle in the North East of England when we were on holiday there a couple of years ago. It was a cloudy period of the day and I liked the way the clouds add a moody atmosphere to the picture and also the balance that the shape of the algae growing at the front of the lake makes with the shape of the lake. This was taken with my Pentax K-5 fitted […]

Blickling Hall in late December

Today we went to Blickling Hall, a National Trust property in Norfolk, for a visit. It was one of those really cold, but very clear days that you get in the winter with the sun very low in the sky which made the scenery beautifully lit up but also increased the possibility of flare if the sun made it into any of the shots. Unfortunately, I misread the website notification of the opening times so when we arrived, although the […]
