Flowers shot on film

I’ve been using film cameras quite a bit over the last few weeks and I’ve collected together some pictures which all share the same subject – flowers. These were taken with a variety of film cameras – a Pentax SFXn, Minolta Dynax 505si Super and Pentax MZ-30. The film used was Fuji Superia 400 colour negative film and Agfa Vista plus 200, and all were taken in Aperture Priority mode on their respective cameras. After development the negatives were scanned […]

Favourite pictures – The hyacinth

This hyacinth plant was growing in the Museum Gardens in York and I found it as I was walking along the river bank when we were visiting recently. Since I had my wide angle Tamron lens fitted to my camera I tried taking a flower shot using the widest setting of 10mm with the aperture open as wide as it would go which is f/3.5. Obviously at that setting the background defocus will not be very great, but I think […]

Photoshop effects – removing all colour except one

I’ve seen an effect before which isolates a single colour in a picture – removing every colour other than the chosen one. In my experimentation with photoshop I found a way to do this which may or may not be the correct way (although I’m beginning to find that there are many ways to do the same things in photoshop). The way I achieved this effect was as follows: I started a new selection using the Select -> Colour Range […]

The best of Mum's Garden

We went to visit Mum and Dad this bank holiday weekend and I took a few photo’s around Mum’s garden. These are the best of the pictures which were all taken with a Sony Nex 6 using M42 mount manual lenses. Specifically the lenses I used were a 55mm f/1.8 Super Multi Coated Takumar, a 55mm f/2.0 SMC Takumar and a 135mm f/3.5 Super Multi Coated Takumar. Macro picture of Chives

Whilst I was writing my post about macro options at the weekend I felt inspired to go out into the garden with my Tamron 90mm macro lens mounted on my Nex 6 to put into practice some of the techniques I’d been writing about. This picture was taken in the small herb garden where we have mint, basil etc growing and I found the chives had small flowers growing. I got down low so I could focus on one flower […]

Favourite Pictures – A bowl of flowers

This picture was taken in Tranmer House at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk during our recent holiday. It ls a very simple picture but it’s my¬†favourite of all the pictures I took during that day because of the light caught on the flower’s petals and the out of focus area in the background. It’s quite normal to isolate a subject by throwing the background out of focus, but I normally aim for a completely blurred background. I think this effect – […]

A walk round foggy bottom gardens

This post is about the Foggy Bottom gardens which are at Bressingham gardens near Diss in Norfolk. We went the Bressingham to see the Steam Engines and discovered the Foggy Bottom gardens towards the end of the day when James and Emma were tired enough to allow us to walk around them. View the pictures using the gallery below or see the full size versions by following this link. The gardens were apparently designed by Adrian Bloom, and have grown […]

A blanket of buttercups

I was out again yesterday with my Nex-6 and Pentax smc 50mm f/1.7 prime lens and noticed the buttercups making a carpet of yellow under the trees next to the main route to Hertford, I thought is made a nice contrast to see the flowers slowly growing next to the busy main road so I got down low and took these shots with the cars an out of focus blur. ¬†I had to use the back panel lcd on these […]

Bury my head

I went out with my Tamron 90 mm Lens again today to try to get some Butterfly pictures. The weather forecast had suggested that it was going to be warm and sunny today, but in the end it was quite cold and windy so I didn’t find any butterflies at all. I did find this chap however nestling under a buttercup leaf, trying to keep warm perhaps ? Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Pentax K-5 f/4.0 1/500 iso320 Related Posts:Exakta Exa 500 […]

Snowdrops and Daffodils

I saw some snowdrops growing in a local patch of grassland a few days ago and took a quick snap on my mobile phone, but resolved to go back another day with my ‘real’ camera. Well, this morning James & I went back and I took some more pictures & used the opportunity to try out the Metz 58 af2 flash gun I got at Christmas as a fill in flash. I have not used a flash much before, and […]

Bokeh

This image was one I selected from the large backlog of pictures I have sitting in my Lightroom library. I am not feeling well today but I wanted to post an image so I was looking through the set of pictures I took in the garden when I got my Tamron 90mm Macro lens. This one struck me as a good demonstration of the bokeh obtained with this lens. Pentax K-5 Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro 1/100sec iso200 f/2.8 Related articles […]
