Favourite Pictures – Emma in Knebworth park

This is a picture which I took several years ago when my daughter Emma was only a small child and we took a family trip to the Park at Knebworth house. It was taken with a Pentax K200D DSLR, and a Pentax 55 to 200mm zoom lens. I particularly like the way the fence which she was holding on to leads the eye into the subject matter.

Favourite pictures – my Daughter Emma

The picture below is another of my favourite pictures which I’ve not published on this site before. It’s a picture of my daughter which I took several years ago when she was only a little girl. I think the think which most strikes me about the picture, and which marks it out as one of my favourites, is the light in the picture. It was a very bright day, which led to a very high contrast picture and it particularly...

    Favourite pictures – Eddie

While we were visiting Gloucestershire recently we went to Bourton-on-the-Water to visit the model village there. As we were walking through the village I saw this dog playing in the water and stopped to get a few pictures of him. Although I don’t know the dog’s actual name, for the purposes of this post I’ve called him Eddie because to me he looked like an Eddie. I took this with my Sigma 18-125 HSM zoom fitted to the Pentax K5...

Favourite pictures – York city wall defensive fort.

Another picture I took in York recently – this time it is part of the defensive elements of the city wall which surrounds the medieval city. Again it was with a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle lens set to 10mm to capture the maximum amount of the surrounding view. Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5 Sony Nex 6 ISO 160 1/250sec f/22 10mm

Favourite pictures – The river in York

This is a picture I took during our recent trip to York. It’s another picture taken with my Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle lens fitted on my Sony Nex 6 camera and shows the River Ouse and my Daughter enjoying an ice cream whilst sitting on the bank. Favourite pictures – Lighting candles

This is a series of pictures I took in York Minster recently when my Daughter wanted to light a candle. They were taken with a 55mm Takumar f/1.8 lens fitted to a Camdiox focal reducer, making an effective aperture of about f/1.4 and used only the available light. I liked these pictures when I first saw them on the review screen of my Nex just after I took them, but I didn’t notice the small flaw with them until I...

Favourite pictures – York Minster gate

This is a picture taken outside York Minster of the gates leading into the gardens/grassed area which surround it. This is another picture which I took using my Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5 super wide angle lens. On our trip to York it turned into a bit of a work horse, being fitted to my camera more often than any other lens I took with me and one of the reasons was because of the great definition, colour and contrast it offers....

    Favourite pictures – The hyacinth

This hyacinth plant was growing in the Museum Gardens in York and I found it as I was walking along the river bank when we were visiting recently. Since I had my wide angle Tamron lens fitted to my camera I tried taking a flower shot using the widest setting of 10mm with the aperture open as wide as it would go which is f/3.5. Obviously at that setting the background defocus will not be very great, but I think...

Favourite pictures – The Sun in York

As we were walking along the river bank in the City of York recently, I took this picture of the road and people. It was a nice sunny day and I had my Tamron super wide angle lens fitted to my Sony Nex 6 and took this shot low down to emphasise the cobble stones. The aperture was set to f/22 to maximize the depth of field which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/320 sec at ISO 100, whilst...

Favourite pictures – my Daughter Emma

This is a picture of my daughter Emma which I took during a recent trip to York Minster. I had been taking some pictures of the rail that she is posing next to using a Takumar 55mm f/1.8 lens fitted on my Camdiox focal reducer and Sony Nex 6 when she jokingly tried to get into the picture by jumping up into shot. I asked her to stay there for a minute and took the picture to the left which...

Favourite pictures – York museum gardens

This was one of those shots where I couldn’t actually see the composition when I took the picture, but it turned out ok anyway. We were walking through the Museum Gardens in the City of York and I saw this tree and the rock placed at the foot of it. I thought it might make a nice picture to include the rock in the foreground, so I bent down to take it but couldn’t see through the viewfinder or see...

    Favourite pictures – The wall

While we were at Beningbrough Hall in Yorkshire recently I had the 16-50mm standard lens fitted to my Sony Nex 6 and I tried taking a few pictures with the iAuto camera setting just to see how it performed. The result is the picture below which I think is really rather nice. I had to apply the lens corrections in Lightroom because the Sony E 16-50mm has some serious distortion at 16mm which this picture was taken at, but with...

Favourite pictures – Emma waiting with rabbit.

I took this short sequence of pictures while we were on holiday at CenterParcs in Woburn Forest last September and hadn’t really looked at them again since we got home but as I was looking through my Lightroom Library this evening I realised how much I liked them. I took them with my Sony Nex 6 fitted with a telephoto lens. Because we were on holiday in CenterParcs I wasn’t following my usual routine so I can’t be sure of...

Favourite pictures – The lake at Raby Castle

This is a picture I took at Raby Castle in the North East of England when we were on holiday there a couple of years ago. It was a cloudy period of the day and I liked the way the clouds add a moody atmosphere to the picture and also the balance that the shape of the algae growing at the front of the lake makes with the shape of the lake. This was taken with my Pentax K-5 fitted...

Favourite pictures – Emma the photographer

As I looked through my google plus feed this morning I saw a ‘your year in photos’ post automatically added by google to my feed. When I looked through the sample of pictures in this the one above stood out as one of my better pictures of Emma, so I thought I’d make it the subject of a favourite picture post. This was taken in Bressingham gardens in Norfolk when we were on holiday there earlier in the year. Emma...

Favourite pictures – The accordion player

This is one of those pictures which starts out as a colour picture which doesn’t really stand out, but once converted to black & white makes more of an impact. I took this whilst we were on holiday in Durham last year with a Pentax K5 and Sigma 18-125 HSM zoom. We were walking through the town and I saw this man playing and instinctively raised the camera and snapped without any real thought about composition. Later I cropped it...

    Favourite Pictures – The post

This is another picture I took at Dunwich on the Suffolk coast during our recent holiday. I was experimenting with taking pictures of my children with this fence post as an out of focus foreground interest object, when I tried changing the point of view by focusing on the post rather than James & Emma. I think this works rather well and actually highlights the children playing. Sony Nex 6 Takumar 55mm f/1.8 iso 100 1/125sec f/5.6?

Favourite Pictures – A bowl of flowers

This picture was taken in Tranmer House at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk during our recent holiday. It ls a very simple picture but it’s my favourite of all the pictures I took during that day because of the light caught on the flower’s petals and the out of focus area in the background. It’s quite normal to isolate a subject by throwing the background out of focus, but I normally aim for a completely blurred background. I think this effect –...

    Favourite Pictures – Framlingham

This picture was taken in the Suffolk village of Framlingham during our recent holiday. We went for a visit to the castle at Framlingham but Jan found a walk round the town which took in all the interesting and historic properties and views and so I took pictures as we walked around. When we got to this lane I tried lowering the camera to use the brickwork pavement as a series of lines leading the eye into the picture and...
