Taking Miranda on Holiday

In a couple of weeks time we are going on holiday to the Woburn Forest Center Parcs. It’s not the first time we’ve been to Center Parcs, or the first time we’ve been to Woburn Forest so as I started thinking about the types of photos I could take and which lenses etc to take with me I was trying to think of something which would bring a different angle to the holiday and the photos I could take. Suddenly […]

York Minster pictures

Whilst we were on holiday in York we paid a visit to York Minster where I took a large number of pictures. Although I’ve published some of the pictures of my daughter and some other pictures in and around the Minster,  I haven’t published all my favourite interior shots so I’ve gathered them all here in a single post. Obviously, there are several parts of a church interior which are dark places, so a lot of these pictures were taken […]

Favourite pictures – York city wall defensive fort.

Another picture I took in York recently – this time it is part of the defensive elements of the city wall which surrounds the medieval city. Again it was with a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle lens set to 10mm to capture the maximum amount of the surrounding view. Favourite pictures – The Sun in York

As we were walking along the river bank in the City of York recently, I took this picture of the road and people. It was a nice sunny day and I had my Tamron super wide angle lens fitted to my Sony Nex 6 and took this shot low down to emphasise the cobble stones. The aperture was set to f/22 to maximize the depth of field which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/320 sec at ISO 100, whilst […]

Favourite pictures – my Daughter Emma

This is a picture of my daughter Emma which I took during a recent trip to York Minster. I had been taking some pictures of the rail that she is posing next to using a Takumar 55mm f/1.8 lens fitted on my Camdiox focal reducer and Sony Nex 6 when she jokingly tried to get into the picture by jumping up into shot. I asked her to stay there for a minute and took the picture to the left which […]

National railway museum York

During a recent trip to York we visited the National Railway Museum which is conveniently situated next to a Park and Ride bus stop in the city. I assumed that I would need to use a fairly wide angle lens to take pictures of the engines, so I packed my Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle along with a Takumar 28mm f/3.5 and Takumar 55mm f/1.8 to use on my Camdiox focal reducer. As it happens I mostly used the longest […]

Photoshop filters – radial blur 2nd attempt

Yesterday I posted a picture which used the Photoshop radial blur filter to create an image which had quite a dramatic look and was noticeably different from the original. I thought the result was quite good but one comment I received was that the effect was not really appropriate for that type of filter. Having thought again about the picture I think the comment was a fair and reasonable one so I thought I would have a go at producing […]

A day trip to Bennington Lordship

Today we decided to take a trip to Bennington Lordship to see the Snowdrops. It wasn’t a planned trip – we just looked on the website to see when it was open and discovered that today was one of the days when it was open so we decided to go over and see what the snowdrops were like. It’s only about 3 miles away from our house and only takes about 10 minutes to get there, so once we knew […]

Favourite pictures – Emma waiting with rabbit.

I took this short sequence of pictures while we were on holiday at CenterParcs in Woburn Forest last September and hadn’t really looked at them again since we got home but as I was looking through my Lightroom Library this evening I realised how much I liked them. I took them with my Sony Nex 6 fitted with a telephoto lens. Because we were on holiday in CenterParcs I wasn’t following my usual routine so I can’t be sure of […]

Favourite pictures – Emma the photographer

As I looked through my google plus feed this morning I saw a ‘your year in photos’ post automatically added by google to my feed. When I looked through the sample of pictures in this the one above stood out as one of my better pictures of Emma, so I thought I’d make it the subject of a favourite picture post. This was taken in Bressingham gardens in Norfolk when we were on holiday there earlier in the year. Emma […]

London zoo – 35mm slides from 1980

Whilst sorting through some of my Dad’s old 35mm slides a couple of days ago I found a whole series of slides which I took in 1980 after I’d just moved to Harpenden to start work. I remember taking a trip to London Zoo one Saturday with either my Petri MF-1 or possibly an Olympus OM-20, and taking these pictures. Although these are in no way very interesting pictures, I wanted to record them in a permanent way, hence this post. You […]

Processing scanned 35mm slides in Lightroom and Photoshop

This is a post describing the steps I’ve taken to try to correct some colour casts and exposure problems with 35mm colour slides. I recently discovered a large box of 35mm slides which my Dad took in the 1960’s of our family. There are about 500 slides in total and I’m working through scanning them and getting them to look as good as I can. I am scanning them on an HP Photosmart C8180 Printer/Scanner using the inbuilt slide holder […]
