Change in WordPress view stats?

Has anyone else noticed a change in the way WordPress are counting views in the last couple of weeks? I’ve noticed that although my visitor numbers have stayed at approximately the same level over the last few weeks, the number of visits per visitor has dramatically changed. It happens that because of the nature of my site I have quite a few picture galleries and up until a few weeks ago any gallery view of a picture was counted as […]

A family night with colour slides

A few weeks ago we relived an event which is a fond memory from my boyhood – a family night with colour slides. Equipment In order to view the slides I needed to obtain a slide projector and so I’ve been looking on eBay over the last few weeks to see what I could find. Slide projectors are really easy to find at the moment, and quite cheap, so I wasn’t really surprised that I could pick up a decent […]

Fuji X-T1 first impressions

Having owned my Fuji X-T1 for a couple of days I thought I’d write a brief post on the features I find most outstanding in my limited experience. First, for those unfamiliar with the X-T1, it’s an APS-C sensor mirror-less camera with interchangeable lens, electronic viewfinder, a good level of configurability, full weather sealing and excellent controls reminiscent of a 1970s film camera. It’s also true to say that it is made by one of the original camera manufacturers who have […]

New site design

Any regular reader will notice that my photo blog has a different look this morning. Although I don’t like to mess with the layout or theme often, I do review it every year or so to see if I think it would look better using a different layout. This year however I changed it for a more compelling reason. I discovered using google analytics that nearly 50% of the users are accessing the site using a mobile device rather than […]

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions – or where to host my site.

It was about a year ago that I moved my site from a wordpress domain, simonhawketts.wordpress.com to my own domain simonhawketts.com but at the time I made that move I kept the site hosting at wordpress.com. The payment for the hosting is due for renewal in a few weeks time and I’ve been deciding if I should keep the site within workpress or if I should move to a self hosted arrangement. The driver for this is not really cost […]

Film or Digital ?

Over the last 6 to 12 months it’s become more and more frequent that when I go anywhere to take pictures I will take along a film camera as well as my Pentax K5 or Sony Nex 6 digital camera. Because of that I have several instances where I have pictures which have been captured with both a digital sensor and film so I thought  it would be interesting to try to compare the images and see which I find […]

Which medium format camera ?

Ever since I started to have a renewed interest in film photography I’ve had the desire to own a medium format camera. I bought a Pentacon Six with the idea of refurbishing and repairing it, but that project stalled because the shutter assembly is in pretty poor condition and, having seen the quality of the engineering that makes it, I’m not convinced that buying a reasonable unit to replace it is actually good value for money. (I don’t actually class […]

Observations when shooting with a folding camera

I recently loaded a roll of FP4+ black & white film in my Selfix 1620 and took it for a spin around the town. Because it’s been a very long time since I took photographs with a camera of this type, I thought I’d record my impressions and observations when shooting with a folding camera. The first thing I realised quite early on is that you have to do everything manually in order to capture the picture. OK – that’s […]

The annoyance of scripted views

In August 2013 I wrote a post titled ‘What has happened to my wordpress views‘ which was bemoaning the fall away in my blog views in that month. As it happened, that seemed to be a seasonal thing and as I’ve continued to add posts to my site the traffic has gradually grown as my pages get found be search and social media users. Well this week I experienced the opposite of that problem. At about 10pm on Sunday I […]

Some advice for eBay sellers

Ebay is both a blessing and a curse for us camera collectors. It’s a blessing because lots of old cameras which would otherwise be thrown out are made available to an audience of eager collectors, but it’s a curse because it means it’s almost impossible to find a real bargain any more. Everyone who clears the attic of a relative or friend and finds an old camera can look up the price on ebay and suddenly see pound signs floating […]

Macro photography options

I’ve always been interested in macro photography and I’ve tried many different techniques to try to take the best close up and macro pictures I can, so I thought I would do a post on the various options available and which ones I feel are best. Please note that in this field, as with everything else photography related, I am a completely self taught amateur so I’m not putting these ideas forward as gospel, simply my understanding of the subject. […]

Shooting with primes

Before we went on holiday I wrote a post about the kit I was intending to take with me. Now we are back, this is a follow up post to explain how I got on using that kit. The pictures above are all ones which I feel were helped by using the manual lens kit I took with me rather than a standard kit zoom. Each of these pictures was taken a with one of the manual lenses I listed […]

Playing the photography game.

How good are my photographs ? I bet most photographers have asked themselves that question and find it as difficult as I do to get an answer. Of course you can ask your family and friends for their opinion (even their truly honest opinion) but they are obviously a bit biased and you know that it’s not the same as an opinion from other photographers. So I suspect that most people do what I do. They upload their pictures to […]

Or should I move to mirrorless ?

A few months ago I wrote a post about moving to Nikon from my current Pentax system. I have been contemplating that move because I was looking for some Pentax K mount extension tubes and found that it almost impossible to find any. This sounds like a fairly minor reason to move camera manufacturers and abandon years worth of lens acquisition etc, but that was really a trigger to make me think about the whole system I am buying into […]
