Praktica TL3 35mm slr camera

Praktica made a whole series of tough, dependable, solid cameras in the 1960s, 70s and 80s which sold in large numbers. The subject of this post, the Praktica TL3, is no exception and the fact that it’s still working well some 30 odd years after it was made. Praktica TL3 Images My Praktica TL3 Camera There is a certain similarity to most of the Praktica series of 35mm cameras, so I got the distinct feeling I’d seen this camera before […]

Pentona II 35mm viewfinder camera

The Pentona II is a very simple viewfinder camera made in Germany in the early 1960’s by a company called KW, which was one of the companies which later became part of the Pentacon brand. Pentaona II Images My Pentona II Camera I actually have two copies of this camera which I purchased for a total of £6 because they were both sold as faulty because the shutters didn’t work. As it happens, the camera is one of that type […]

Pentacon Pentina strip down

A few days ago I bought a Pentacon Pentina 35mm slr from an ebay auction for a couple of pounds. It was cheap because it was faulty and needed a repair so I thought it would be an interesting camera to try to improve my repair skills with. These pictures can also be viewed full sized here. The problem reported with the camera was that the mechanism was locked – it was not possible to advance the film, fire the […]

Praktica MTL 5B 35mm slr

The Praktica MTL 5B was one of the later ‘traditional’ models of 35mm slr made by the Pentacon company in Germany. In design it is very similar to other  Praktica cameras with the signature front mounted shutter release; stop down lever for the metering; square, boxy look and M42 lens mount. Praktica MTL 5B Images My Praktica MTL 5B Camera This camera was purchased simply to add to my collection of Praktica cameras. I bought it in an unknown condition […]

Praktica B200 electronic camera review

The Praktica B200 was the first of the B series of cameras produced by Praktica in the late 1970’s. It offered manual and auto exposure, AE lock, ttl metering, exposure compensation, a new set of bayonet mount lenses and a new look compared to the earlier Praktica series. Praktica B200 Images My Praktica B200 Camera I bought this camera to complement the B100 I own which is a simpler, auto only camera. The Praktica B series only consisted of the […]

Praktica Super TL3 35mm camera review

This is my review/description of the Praktica Super TL3 35mm single lens reflex camera. Praktica Super TL3 Images My Praktica Super TL3 Camera I bought this camera as a job lot box of cameras on eBay for a total of £9-49. I would have been happy enough to pay that for just the Praktica Super TL3, but since I also received a fully working Minolta X-700, a Pentax Spotmatic SPII, a Zenit E and three lenses in the same box […]

Praktica Super TL slow speed escapement clean and lubricate.

A few days ago I received a Praktica Super TL 35mm camera which had a problem with the slow speeds. In this post I’m going to describe the procedure I used to remove the Super TL slow speed escapement, clean it and get it working again. The first part of the operation is to reveal the slow speed escapement which is situated in the bottom compartment so the bottom cover needs to come off. To do this you need to […]

Praktica Super TL 35mm camera review

This is a review of the Praktica Super TL 35mm SLR camera which was made by Pentacon some time between 1968 and 1976. Praktica Super TL Images My Praktica Super TL Camera I purchased this camera as a non working model with an aim to servicing it and restoring it to it’s fully working condition. There were several units available from the same supplier on eBay, but because my intention was to improve my repair skills, I concentrated on finding […]

Praktica IV 35mm SLR

The Praktica IV 35mm slr was manufactured in East Germany between 1960 and 1964. There were a few different models – the one I have is a version 2, which was the first made by the newly formed Pentacon company, and is fitted with a Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primotar 50mm f/2.8 lens. Pentacon Six Project. Step 5 – attempted initial shutter setup.

In my last post I gave some observations and conclusions I’d reached from my initial examination of the shutter assembly in my Pentacon Six. In this post I’m going to describe the progress I’ve made to get the shutter working again prior to trying to calibrate the shutter speeds. After my initial attempts to lubricate the mechanism, and getting the mirror and shutter blinds out of sync, the whole mechanism was not working anymore so I decided to try to […]

Pentacon Six project – Step 4 Pentacon Six Viewfinder repair

Whilst I’m carrying out repairs and adjustments on the shutter assembly of my Pentacon Six, I’ve also been looking at the viewfinder and lens which both needed some attention.  In this post I’m going to show the repairs and cleaning which took place on the viewfinder. When I first received the Pentacon Six the viewfinder was in a reasonable state cosmetically, with just a couple of scratches, but optically it had a couple of chips in the prism, and these […]

Pentacon six project – Step 3, Pentacon Six shutter assembly

This is the third post in my Pentacon Six project and follows on from my last one where I removed the shutter from the chassis and carried out a bit of a clean and lubrication. Since then I’ve had a look at the Pentacon Six shutter assembly and I’ve come to a few conclusions/observations. For a start I was surprised at how flimsy the shutter assembly is when out of the chassis. The plate that the film advance assembly fits […]

Pentacon Six Project – Step two, removing the shutter assembly

Saturday  I thought I’d made real progress on my Pentacon six project because I managed to get the shutter working with a bit of lubrication to the film advance mechanism. However I discovered that the 2nd curtain is not light tight, so I would need to do something to make it so. Today (Sunday) however I’ve definitely taken a couple of steps backwards. First I found that contrary to yesterday’s belief that the shutter was all working, when set to […]

Pentacon Six Project. Step one – removing top plate and examining the shutter.

This evening I took my first steps to repair my Pentacon six by having a look at what was stopping the second curtain closing when the shutter is fired. To do that I had to remove the top plate of the camera so I could examine it and I’ve detailed the Pentacon Six strip down procedure here. I won’t give many more details than the pictures because it is all pretty self explanatory and was actually quite easy. Pentacon Six […]
