Spring in super wide angle

I’ve been thinking for a while that I want to get back to posting some more pictures on my photoblog, and not just concentrate on vintage cameras. Although I am interested in film and vintage photography, I still enjoy using my digital kit as well, so this morning, being a brilliantly clear day with hardly a cloud in the sky, I decided to go for a walk with my Pentax K5 and Tamron 10 – 24mm super wide angle lens […]

Lincoln on film – part two

This is the second post containing the rest of the pictures I shot on film during a recent trip to Lincoln on holiday. These were all taken with a Pentax MZ-3 35mm autofocus camera using Fuji Superia 800 ISO film.  I’m a little more pleased with these pictures than the set contained in the first post, the colours seem better and the grain not so pronounced. These pictures can be viewed full sized here. As with the last set, these […]

Lincoln on film – part one

This is the first part of a post to publish the pictures I took in Lincoln on 35mm colour negative film during our recent holiday. I used three colour negative films during the week, two rolls of 800 ISO Fuji and a roll of 400 ISO fuji. This is the first roll of the faster film. These pictures can be viewed in full sized here. To be honest I’m a bit disappointed with these pictures. I think viewing the slide […]

Trying out colour slide film

When we were recently on holiday in Lincolnshire I took a camera loaded with colour slide film because I was interested to see what sort of results I would get with this medium. We’ve been back a week now and I’ve just received the film back from the lab so I’m using this post to publish my thoughts about the results. The camera I used was a Pentax MZ-3 autofocus 35mm SLR, which I judged would be able to correctly […]

Pentax Z-10 autofocus 35mm slr

The Pentax Z-10 is an entry level 35mm autofocus camera from the Pentax Z series introduced in the early 1990’s. It was actually the first of the Z series and paved the way for such fantastic cameras as the Z-1p which is one of my favourite auto focus film cameras. Pentax Z-10 Images My Pentax Z-10 camera This is a camera I purchased for a few pounds simply to augment my Z series collection. I have the Z-1 and Z-1p […]

Holiday camera choices

For any vintage camera enthusiast, holiday time always leaves you with a bit of a headache. You know that you will be presented with lots of photo opportunities over the coming few days and that starts you thinking about the ideal cameras to take with you, but when you have a collection of 100 plus it isn’t always simple to narrow the choice. Since we are going away in a couple of weeks on a family holiday to Lincolnshire, I’ve […]

Macro photography on film

I like taking macro photos but up until now it has always been a digital photography past time – I’ve never really ventured into the macro world with a film camera. Well this week I thought it was time I addressed that and decided I would have a go at using one of my film cameras to take some macro pictures. These pictures can also be viewed full size here. Equipment I had a think about the equipment to use […]

Pentax Program A short camera review

This is a short review of the Pentax Program A 35mm camera which mainly covers the differences between this camera and the Pentax Super Program which I reviewed a few weeks ago. Pentax Program A Images My Pentax Program A Camera I bought this camera mostly for the lens which came with it which is an SMC Pentax-M 28mm f/2.8. This is like a faster version of Takumar 28mm f/3.5 which I have, but with a Pentax K mount rather […]

Pentax MZ-3 sample photographs

This post is to show the Pentax MZ-3 sample photographs I took from the first film I ran through my Pentax MZ-3 camera last week. Because I was taking some pictures of bluebells in a close by wood, I used a roll of Agfa Superia 800 ISO film in order to enable me to use hand held shutter speeds in quite a low light situation. Pentax MZ-3 sample photographs I tried both Aperture Priority and Program mode on the MZ-3 […]

Pentax Z-20 sample photos

Last night I developed the first film I’d run through my Pentax Z-20 slr and this morning I’ve scanned the resultant negatives so this post is to highlight the Pentax Z-20 sample photos. My first impression is that the negatives are a little under exposed and flat. As they were scanned, the histogram for each negative was very bunched up in the centre of the display and therefore the entire dynamic range of the picture was scanned over a quite […]

Pentax MZ-3 autofocus slr review

This is a review of almost the top camera in the Pentax MZ series – the Pentax MZ-3. Only one camera had a better spec than the MZ-3 and that was the MZ-S which was, and still is, considerably more expensive to obtain than the MZ-3. Pentax MZ-3 Images My Pentax MZ-3 Camera I acquired this camera to fill in the gap in my Pentax MZ series collection because it is one of the only models (other than the MZ-S) […]

Replacing the mirror return motor in a Pentax MZ-5n

A while ago I bought a nice clean Pentax MZ-5n 35mm SLR body for £18 from ebay which was described as being ‘fully functional’. Unfortunately when I received it it turned out to have a problem with the mirror return motor which stops the shutter from working. I did some Internet searching and found that this is a common fault with all the Pentax MZ series – the motor which returns the mirror has a small plastic cog which splits […]

Pentax Z-20 35mm auto-focus slr review

This is a review of one of the best specified models in the Pentax Z series of auto-focus 35mm film cameras – the Pentax Z-20. This is one of the not so well know models in the Pentax range, but one that I think is a bit of a star once you get to know it. Pentax Z-20 Images My Pentax Z-20 Camera This Pentax Z-20 was bought to compliment my other Pentax Z series cameras, a Z-1 and Z-1p […]

Pentax K1000 top plate removal

Today I started the clean up and repair of my Pentax K1000 and the first job was the removal of the top plate. As usual when I carry out any repairs, I try to take lots of pictures so that I can easily repeat the operation as required and also make sure I can put the camera together again! This process is also pretty much the same on the Spotmatic series of cameras, especially the later versions. On this occasion […]

Pentax K1000 35mm slr camera

I think it’s fair to say that the Pentax K1000 was the camera that many people learnt photography with. Being a reliable, manual exposure, no frills camera meant it was the model which many photographic schools recommended for their courses, and therefore the first real camera that many people who enrolled on those courses handled. I was not fortunate enough to either take a photography course, or own a Pentax K1000 many years ago when had my first camera (which […]
