This post tells the short story of how I took this picture of the Claire Marie boat at Sherringham in Norfolk.

We went on Holiday to Norfolk a couple of years ago and one of our visits while we were there was to the North Norfolk Steam Railway which travels between Holt and Sherringham. Nearly all the railway lines in Norfolk were closed in the 1960’s cuts, so riding a train through the Norfolk countryside is quite a novel occurrence. The pictures I took on the railway will be the Subject of another post, but this post is about one of the pictures I took when we arrived at the seaside town of Sherringham on the North Norfolk coast.

Sherringham is a pebble beach rather than the traditional sand, and has several large rocks and well as a tall sea wall which protects the town. I had taken my Pentax K-r DSLR with me along with a Pentax 18-55 standard lens, a Tamron 70-300mm tele zoom and a Tamron 10-24 mm super wide angle lens.

When I saw the Claire Marie boat on the beach I had the idea of trying to take a shot with the sun flaring out from behind the mast with a sort of starburst effect. I fitted the Tamron 10-24mm to get the maximum viewing angle and positioned myself with the sun befind the mast. I tried a variety of different exposure and compensation levels, but  unfortunately, at the time I didn’t really know how to get the starburst effect, so the result is not as I’d hoped. I think if I’d had a much smaller aperture I could have achieved it, but this shot was taken at 1/6000 @ f8.

I had to do quite a lot of post processing to get the shadows to have any detail. All in all it’s a bit of a disappointment because I think there was the potential to have made a more interesting picture, but I’m sure to go back sometime and perhaps I’ll have another go.
